Richard was born in 1972 in Forest Gate, East London. He was
brought up in a Christian home and one of his earliest memories is
of recreating drawings from the Lion's Childrens' Bible. He
remembers drawing lots of bearded figures in robes! In nursery his
love of art was nurtured and encouraged when one of his pictures of
Jesus was shown off in a gallery there. At 8 or 9 he started to
draw Batman and Superman figures and started drawing from comics
and Star Wars was a major influence. It was from this time on that
he became fascinated with the fantasy genre.
At secondary school, he entered art competitions and won
several. He had a teacher who saw his potential and pushed him hard
which he didn't always appreciate at the time! This teacher also
encouraged him to go to Art College and make something of himself.
After studying 3-D design and spacial design amongst other things
at College, Richard starting working for a model company for an
advertising company and then worked in a company making
architectural models.
At this time, he started a small press with two friends called
End Time Comics which produced a Christian comic book about
spiritual warfare. Storylines featured people living lives in the
physical world and how that same person would be viewed in the
spiritual world. His working life continued to develop as he
started designing packaging and book covers on computers. He moved
next to working on computer games - Dune Emperor and later on The
Italian Job games.
Richard now works in a school but does Christian illustration as
well and has done illustrations for Hodder & Stoughton among
others. He has also done a graphic novel for Highland Books called
Riddler's Fayre which is set in the Middle Ages and is a Christian
allegory.
As a young believer, Richard was fascinated with illustrating
verses eg bruised for our iniquities. He tried to capture the verse
in his art but could never be satisfied. He learnt that you can
never exhaust a verse: there is always more to see. What Richard
most wants to do is show in his art how the Bible has such depth
and bring out deeper meanings from Bible verses, getting people to
look at the Bible in a way they have perhaps never done before.
